Hi there! This month has been a hard one for me… I always have a hard time when it gets close to Christmas as *Gasp* I’m not really a holidays person. I always somehow feel like because I’m such a Grinch I’ll let my little ones down, so I’m trying my very hardest to fake utter excitement for them.. Along with these decidedly un-festive feelings, my Father died the day after my daughter’s 5th Birthday, earlier this month. We have never been close, and indeed spent much of my life estranged, but It’s still been hard on me.
I’ve found that working on some mixed media has really helped soothe my soul, and this is my latest piece- funnily enough, the canvas board was the remainder of an art set he bought me a few years ago whilst we were briefly back in touch, so it seemed only fitting to use it, once I’d found it.
I’ve pulled together lots of bright colours, and stamps from various companies for this Piece, and I will link to everything that you can find on Amazon at the bottom of this post.
Firstly, I gessoed the canvas, to help everything stick a bit better, and save everything just seeping into the canvas- It was only a cheap one and not very sturdy, so Gesso gave it a little extra sturdiness.
I then used a retired PSX background script stamp to stamp over random areas of the canvas, and also parts of a red rubber Bingo Stamp that I i inked up and used without a block. I then added a layer of multi medium matte glue and dried with my heat gun.
After the multi medium matte layer, I took out my Ranger Transparent gloss texture paste, Cosmic Shimmer Sparkle Texture paste and a couple of masks (a floral stencil from Tim Holtz, and a large Dot mask and applied to random parts of the canvas, after deciding which areas I wanted to leave fairly flat for the wording and embossed stamped areas. I left these to dry naturally , and planned what I was going to do next.
I decided to use my Distress crayons , because they looked so bright and beautiful in the packet, and I hadn’t tried them out yet. I discovered that over the multi medium matte paste, they were slightly translucent, but it was a really beautiful effect. I scribbled them one by one onto the canvas, and blended them out with a finger, before adding the next colour and blending them together. Once dry, I went back over the top of some of the areas, to make the colours deeper. I used the floral stencil and a lightly damped cloth to take some of the colour back away from areas, and also used a different part of the same cloth to remove the colour from the texture pasted dots. The Cosmic Shimmer paste had sucked up some of the colour from the distress crayons, and I liked the effect so I left those areas as they were.
The stamps I’d decided on using for the foreground of the canvas were some from the UNITY Insightful meadows set , Clearly Besotted Stamps – Butterfly Additions and a sentiment from the Visible Image ‘Tomorrow Doesn’t Exist’ Set which I stamped onto Watercolour paper and heat embossed, then set aside for later. All heat embossed areas were stamped in Ranger Perfect Medium and I used Nuvo Black Embossing powder, set with my heat gun.
I added a few splats using my Dylusions ink sprays ( funky Fuchsia and Calypso Teal and dried. I then went back in with my Picked Raspberry Distress crayon and a Stampin’ Up! hearts mask to add some extra detail. These I heat embossed gently, as it makes the edges puff up and look more 3D. I took the whole thing outside and sprayed with Krystal Clear spray varnish and left to dry until touch dry, and then gave it another coat.
(The distress crayons are reactive to water and moisture, so I wanted it set before gluing on the sentiment)
It took a good long while to dry , so I set it aside overnight and finished off the next day, by Cutting out the sentiment into pieces, adhering with Multi Medium Matte gel and Adding a little crackle Glaze to the butterflies and corners of the canvas. These I dried naturally too.
Once everything was dry, I ran around the edges with my Peacock Feathers Distress ink Pad , and that was it finished.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about the process, and sorry there weren’t more pictures- This was never intended as a tutorial, I just went with the flow, and lost myself in it, but I wanted to show you all, and tell you about it after the fact!
Seee you next time! Rachel
